The Tales Of

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Tarzan of the Apes-Signet
Edgar Rice Burroughs is doubtless one of the most famous writers of adventure and science fiction stories in the entire world. Best known as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, he wrote over ninety books, with stories ranging from the depths of the earth's core to the distant stars. However, some of his best writing (in my humble opinion) can be found in his earliest works: the Martian Tales.

In 1912, Burroughs sold his first novel, "A Princess of Mars," which introduced John Carter, the ageless ex-Confederate soldier who was mysteriously transported to Mars. His adventures upon the Red Planet (called Barsoom by the indigenous cultures) became a legend. In the following ten books, Burroughs created a new civilation and an entire world of excitement, adventure, and romance.

A Princess of Mars - Cover from early printing

Here is the cover art for one of the earlier (left) and one of the more recent (right) printings of A Princess of Mars. Guess which one is from Frank Frazetta 1970 and which one is from Michael Whelan 1979... Note: both covers feature the main character, John Carter, and the lovely heroine, Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium. The cover on the left by Frank Frazetta, the one on the right was painted by Michael Whelan.
